A new band called 3rd Secret features former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron (also a member of Pearl Jam) and Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil.
This week, the supergroup centered around the influential grunge icons introduced themselves by surprise-releasing their self-titled debut album on Monday (April 11), as Rolling Stone reported.
3rd Secret is led by the vocalists Jillian Raye, of Novoselic’s other group, Giants in the Trees, and Jennifer Johnson. Guitarist Bubba Dupree of ’80s hardcore act Void fills out the sound that incorporates strains of alternative, indie and folk rock, all driven by the dual vocals of Raye and Johnson.

The album 3rd Secret emerged with such surprise that some streaming services are still catching up. “Reports coming over 3rd Secret hotline that album is still not on Apple Music,” the group said in an update on their website on Monday. “Please be patient.”
They added, “We kindly recommend listening on YouTube ‘I Choose Me’ for this song and the others from the album, until your preferred service catches up.”
Cameron and Novoselic are among the main songwriters for 3rd Secret, as the album’s credits show. The LP marks Cameron and Thayil’s first album together since the 2017 death of Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell, though the two did collaborate on a 2021 Pretty Reckless song, “Only Love Can Save Me Now.”
The 3rd Secret album was helped in large part by famed grunge producer Jack Endino. Two days ago, Cameron leaked news of the group’s formation by sharing a photo of them performing during a recent secret gig at Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture.
