Gaming Gets Existential in Turnstile’s ‘Underwater Boi’ Video

Turnstile enter the online virtual world in the punk band’s new music video for their GLOW ON song “Underwater Boi.” Watch it below.

The animated clip was directed and edited by Turnstile drummer Daniel Fang and captured entirely within the realm of Second Life, the 2003 MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) phenomenon.

Perhaps the group is making a statement about the metaverse, the term for the all-encompassing virtual environment now being pushed by Facebook after the social media giant changed its name to Meta in pursuit of the idea last year. (Some artists, such as the singer Poppy, have launched their own metaverses.)

Sound-wise, the breezy shuffle of “Underwater Boi” is unlike the signature stomp of other Turnstile material, including recent singles “Mystery” and “Blackout,” but not unusual considering the act’s penchant for experimenting with sounds. GLOW ON, Turnstile’s third album, emerged last August.

Last month, Turnstile performed “Underwater Boi” and six other songs for an NPR Tiny Desk (Home) Concert surrounded by stuffed albums. Weeks prior, the band performed two songs on Late Night With Seth Meyers for their late-night TV debut.

Loudwire chose GLOW ON as the third best rock and metal album of 2021. The album’s “Holiday,” first issued on the Turnstile Love Connection EP, was one of Loudwire’s best 2021 rock songs. See Turnstile’s upcoming tour dates with support from Citizen and Ceremony beneath the clip.

10 Artists With the Most Iconic Hairstyles in Rock + Metal

Hi, my name is AJ, and I am the vocalist of the horror-influenced metal/rock band We’re Wolves. When I’m not creating and playing music with the band, I am a licensed professional barber in Boca Raton, Fla. I’ve been in the industry cutting hair professionally for eight years.

It has always been rad to see how trendy haircuts are interconnected with music. You can tell a lot about a band just by their hair. Whether they’re goth, rock, metal, punk, etc., hairstyle plays a critical part in the image of a band. Take it from me, a licensed professional guy in a metal band who cares a lot about his hair.

Let’s jump into my top 10 most iconic hairstyles in rock and metal.
