Journey Cover ‘Enter Sandman’ With Kirk Hammett in Hawaii

At their second of two shows in Honolulu, Hawaii, rock legends Journey were joined by Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett for a performance of “Wheel in the Sky,” which also included a snippet of “Enter Sandman.”

The surprise appearance came deep in the set after Neal Schon‘s second guitar solo and, after playing the bulk of the 1978 smash hit, Journey switched gears and the iconic opening riff to the mighty Metallica track was met with a roar of applause from the crowd.

It was a bit of a rough go, as seen in the fan-filmed video footage below, where singer Arnel Pineda delivered an off-kilter portion of the first verse. Even so, it was all smiles onstage in a rare and fun moment which culminated in Hammett tearing off a solo of his own.

Hammett, who is also a known surfing enthusiast, has a home in the “Aloha State” and was grateful for the opportunity to play with Journey, as expressed in a photo slideshow post on his Instagram page.

“Had a wonderful couple days hanging out with Neal and the guys from Journey,” he wrote, “Thanks so much guys for having me jam on Wheel In the Sky, super fun and hope to hang again soon! Much, much Aloha !!!!”

Schon, also grateful for the opportunity, tweeted a photo of him and Hammett playing onstage and said, “Had a great time with Kirk Hammett of @Metallica last night at 2nd Sold Out @JourneyOfficial show in Hawaii Neal Blaisdell Center Honolulu I put together a jam today for Wheel w/ Enter Sandman.”
