Ohana Fest Temporarily Shut Down Before All-Star Eddie Vedder Set

The 2021 Ohana Festival in Dana Point, Calif., curated by Pearl Jam‘s Eddie Vedder, was momentarily evacuated on Friday (Sept. 24) due to a sudden downpour just hours into the event that caused thousands of fans to scramble, according to the Orange County Register.

It soon reopened, with Vedder giving a headlining solo set backed by an all-star band including Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and ex-RHCP guitarist (and current Pearl Jam touring member) Josh Klinghoffer, plus Andrew Watt, Glen Hansard and Pino Palladino, as Spin reported.

“Due to lightning in the area, we are evacuating the venue and pausing the show,” Ohana fest announced via Twitter on Friday. “We expect to open up fully shortly as the storm is passing quickly. Please continue to follow social media and we will let you know when it’s safe to re-enter.”

Less than an hour later, the fest shared, “We are pleased to announce that it is safe to re-enter the festival grounds. In the spirit of Ohana, please remember to be safe and respectful to your fellow festivalgoers. Welcome back!”

Vedder’s daughter Olivia Vedder took the stage at one point to perform the movie soundtrack song “My Father’s Daughter” with her dad. Otherwise, the Pearl Jam singer’s set consisted of tunes by his main band with a few cover songs thrown in for good measure.

Vedder headlined Ohana 2021’s first night after scheduled closers Kings of Leon were forced to back out due to the death of three of the band members’ mother, Betty Ann Murphy, on Friday. My Morning Jacket played an extended set before Vedder took the stage. The Pearl Jam frontman’s due to headline again on Saturday (Sept. 25) before Pearl Jam themselves cap the event’s final night on Sunday (Sept. 26).
