Greetings friends, and welcome to another edition of The Monitor, WIRED’s entertainment news roundup. In this special Memorial Day edition, we have a new Tenet trailer, Tyler Perry’s “Camp Quarantine” (no, that’s not a new TV show), and some good news. Let’s get going.
The New Tenet Trailer Dropped in Fortnite
In case you haven’t noticed, a lot of movie theaters aren’t open right now. But just because Covid-19 is keeping people safely out of multiplexes doesn’t mean studios don’t have coming attractions to show. To wit, Warner Bros. released its latest trailer for Tenet in Fortnite.
The clip for Christopher Nolan’s latest, an espionage thriller for which the director has revealed very few details, played in Epic Games’ virtual world several times last Thursday, accompanied by an interview between Geoff Keighley and the film’s star John David Washington. The movie is slated to hit theaters on July 17 and will reportedly screen in Fortnite sometime this summer as well.
Tyler Perry Has a Plan for Restarting Hollywood Productions
If there’s one thing hanging over Hollywood right now it’s this: When and how can TV and film production resume? Turns out, Tyler Perry has a plan for that. The mogul sent out a 30-page document last week outlining a plan to reopen his Atlanta studio in July while also making sure the crews working there are protected from Covid-19.
Filming for many productions stopped as soon as states and municipalities issued stay-at-home guidelines to slow the spread of the coronavirus, but under the guidelines in Perry’s “Camp Quarantine” document, crews will go back to work and essentially stay on the Tyler Perry Studios campus for the duration of filming. The guidelines also require cast and crew to be tested and participate in a series of other measures both on set and during their travels to ensure everyone’s safety. (Read the full guidelines here.) It’s a bold move for Perry, and one that could provide guidance on what Hollywood productions can, and should, do going forward.
John Krasinski’s Some Good News Is Going to ViacomCBS
First, if you’re not already watching John Krasinski’s web show Some Good News, you’re missing out—especially right now, when so much of the news is bad. Second, if you plan on watching the show in the future, that’ll likely happen on a different platform. According to The Hollywood Reporter, ViacomCBS has picked up the heartwarming show after a massive bidding war. (Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but it sounds big.) As part of the deal, new episodes of the show will go to CBS All Access and then to the company’s other networks. Weirdly, Krasinski will no longer be host of the show—a replacement will reportedly be named at a later date—but he will be an executive producer. So that’s good news.
